Home Page

The Oka Crisis was a dispute over land sacred to the Mohawk tribe of Oka, Quebec, which took place in the summer of 1990.

The town of Oka developed some plans to expand a golf course in the area- onto the and which had been used by the Mohawk community of Kanesatake. This land included sacred burial grounds which were clearly marked by standing tombstones. The Mohawk had filed a claim to the land, but their claim was rejected in 1986.In the crisis, one person was killed and many others injured.

The Mohawk erected a barricade to keep out the demolition forces and the Quebec police were called in to intervene.
